Tour of Hupp's Hill Historic Park Referencing Specific West Virginia 2nd Grade Curriculum Objectives

On the walking trail:

SS.2.5.3 Explore the history of the community by identifying locally significant sites and people.

  • On walking trail, show the strategic and tactical role Hupp's Hill played during the Civil War by locating Valley Pike, Signal Knob, Fisher's Hill, Strasburg as railroad town
  • Show the response to this role by identifying trenches and lunettes.
  • Explain Native American use of trees
  • Discuss use of wild caves

SC.2.6.2 Develop respect and responsibility for the environment by engaging in conservation practices

  • Explain that preventing dumping trash in, and cleaning out, sinkholes, prevents contamination of the water table: whatever goes down comes back up ... in your drinking water!

Inside SJM:

SS.2.5.3 Explore, compare, and contrast the past contributions of heroic people using sources such as stories, folk tales, pictures, poems, songs, legends, holidays and customs.

Show the importance of the jobs performed by:

  • S. Jackson - general of the army
  • J. Harmon - quartermaster
  • J. Hotchkiss - mapmaker
  • H. McGuire - physician
  • Average CW soldier - fighting for his country
  • Southern civilians - making do in a war zone
  • CW children - growing up in very trying circumstances

Inside CC

SC.2.2.1. Demonstrate curiosity, initiative, and creativity by observing, classifying, and comparing the patterns, variations, and interactions of natural objects in the environment.

  • Show stratigraphic layers of limestone due to patterns of water flow at entrance, giant's chair
  • Water becomes carbonic acid that tunnels down into the limestone, forming a cave - examine the funnel - appearance of the entrance
  • Explain wild caves as cat and bear lairs
  • Explain use of cave as Native American camp site

SC.2.2.2. Manipulate scientific instruments and everyday materials to investigate the natural world (thermometer).

  • Observe the cave thermometer, a constant 54* reading, as a median outside temp.

SC.2.2.4. Use safe and proper techniques for handling, manipulating and caring for science materials (follow safety rules, treat living organisms humanely).

  • Explain rationale for Virginia Cave Law, which requires no touching of growing cave formations, as hand oils leave behind a waterproof barrier that prevents additional calcite deposition.
  • Discuss that endangered amphipod must have protection
  • Explain protection of wild cave bat habitats

SC.2.3.1. Identify that systems are made of parts that interact with one another (water cycles, cave environments).

  • Water cycle: precipitation soaks through layers of limestone to water table, which feeds Hupp spring and Half Moon Beach.
  • Action of water in carving out the cave - see erosion marks
  • Water combining with CO2 makes carbonic acid; calcium carbonate contained in seashells in limestone neutralizes acid, which allows calcite formations to grow
  • Tectonic compression caused uplift of limestone

SC.2.3.3. Observe that changes occur gradually and repetitively within the environment.

  • Calcite formations (stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstone, veins) resulted from slow drips of hard water and deposition of minerals within. (Compare to lime buildup on faucets in students' homes)

SC.2.4.19. Describe how fossils are formed.

  • See stratigraphic layers in Hall of Masonry; examine fossil sample in entrance bldg

SC.2.4.20. Match a fossil or a picture of a fossil with a picture of its original organism.

  • Compare the chart of sea creatures to the sample of fossilized limestone in the cave entrance building.

SC.2.5.1. Recognize that common objects and events incorporate science to solve human problems and enhance the quality of life.

  • Limestone is used as a building material for homes and highways
  • People dig wells down to water table
  • Cave was used as shelter - see especially the entrance zone
  • Cave was used for food storage
  • Cave was used as hiding place - see especially the Tower Room
  • Cave was used as saltpeter mine - see especially the Mine
